Holy Thursday – ‘Lord, are you going to wash my feet?’ (Jn 13:6)
“Lord, are You going to wash my feet?”(Jn 13:6)
It seems like a simple question but it carries the deep confusion of the human heart before such a great love. We see Jesus Christ kneeling down. He is our Lord and our God, yet He bends low before His disciples.
The same hands that healed and blessed now touch dusty feet, the feet that have walked through weakness, betrayal, and even running away. There are no words of blame. No distance. Only a quiet love that reaches the deepest part of the heart.
This is how God loves us.
A love that does not stay above to be honored, but comes down low to lift us up. A love that does not choose what is clean or worthy, but touches even the parts we try to hide. He knows our tiredness, our weaknesses, and the failures we cannot even name. Yet He gently says:
“Unless I wash you, you have no part with Me.” (Jn 13:8)
Lord, give us the humility to let You love us. Give us the simplicity to let You touch us. And give us the courage to open our hearts, so that You can wash us clean, not only on the outside, but deep within.
Teach us to bend down, not in weakness, but in the strongest kind of love. To bend down to listen, to serve, and to love even when we are not understood or appreciated. Because only when we dare to bend low like You, can we truly touch the hearts of others.
And yet, this way of love is not always easy to understand. In the moment that Peter seems fell to confusion, Jesus Christ gently says:
“What I am doing, you do not understand now, but later you will understand.”(Jn 13:7)
Lord, there are many times we do not understand what is happening in our lives. We want to see clearly, we want answers right away. But You invite us to believe before we understand.
Help us to trust, even when the path is still unclear, and to believe that everything You do comes from love. Amen. ![]()
