The Epiphany of the Lord
“We have come to pay him homage” (Mt 2:2).
The celebration of Christmas is not merely a matter of the liturgical calendar; it is the celebration of God’s love dwelling among us. God reveals himself as a human person through Jesus Christ. First, this good news was announced by the angel to the Israelites, represented by the shepherds. Today, at the Feast of the Epiphany, God reveals himself to the Gentiles through the Magi, who recognised the divinity of the Saviour in the form of an infant laid in a manger.
The Epiphany leads us to the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, where God reveals himself as the Holy Trinity (Mt 3:16–17). This manifestation of God reminds us that nationality, social status, skin colour, age, or profession do not matter: God desires to come and dwell with everyone, with each one of us. He invites all to come and pay him homage, just as the shepherds and the Magi did.
