Hawaii
The Sisters of the Missionaries of Faith are actively engaged in the lively community at Maria Lanakila Parish and Sacred Hearts School, both situated in the historic district of Lahaina on the island of Maui, in Hawaii
As dedicated educators at our Early Learning Centre, often called the Preschool, the Sisters play a vital role in shaping young minds. They foster a warm and nurturing environment for children aged 3 to 5, employing a variety of teaching methods and engaging activities that support cognitive, social, and emotional development.
Beyond their work at the Preschool, one Sister takes on the role of Middle School Religion Teacher, guiding students aged 12 to 14 through a thoughtful curriculum that delves into their faith and moral values. This curriculum encourages critical thinking and open discussion, stressing the importance of building a personal relationship with Jesus. Through interactive lessons and community service projects, the Sisters inspire a lifelong love of learning and a deep understanding of faith, helping students grow both academically and spiritually.
The Sisters also serve as dedicated catechists in the Maria Lanakila Parish Religious Education Program. They play an essential role in reaching out to students from local public schools by providing religious instruction primarily to young learners in elementary grades, specifically from Kindergarten through third grade. Each lesson is designed to instil key Catholic teachings and doctrines while fostering values such as compassion, empathy, and community service. Using engaging activities, storytelling, and hands-on experiences, the Sisters emphasise the importance of living out one’s faith in daily life, creating a supportive environment that encourages children to develop a strong moral compass and a sense of social responsibility.
One of the Sisters takes on the important role of Director of the Religious Education Program, overseeing curriculum development and instructional strategies. She also manages the technological aspects of the Liturgy, creating and displaying slideshows for all Mass times, which enhance the worship experience by providing the congregation with the necessary prayers and music. This support allows the congregation to engage more fully and meaningfully in the liturgical celebrations.
Two Sisters enrich the liturgical music ministry, using their musical talents to elevate the worship experience. By accompanying the congregation’s singing on the piano during Sunday morning Mass, they help create a joyful and uplifting atmosphere, fostering a deeper connection among all attendees as they come together in worship.
The Sisters also take charge of maintaining and running the Parish gift shop. Both parishioners and visitors are drawn to this charming little shop not only to meet the Sisters but also to discover a variety of Religious Sacramentals and other items available for purchase.
The Sisters are truly woven into the fabric of the parish and school community. Their warm and approachable demeanour has allowed them to build strong relationships with individuals of all ages, from the little children they teach to young adults and senior members of the parish community. The love and devotion they bring to their ministries are invaluable, and the community deeply appreciates their significant contributions in their mission to serve the Parish and the school. We hold immense gratitude for their presence and the positive impact they continue to make in our lives.
